The Morning Shift

Papers cluttered with sweat on the table

as the wakeful hour of the evening hisses
as the long hand passes the short hand
as my mind races to put an order

to the fatigued enthusiasm
to the adulterous kindness
to the hypocritical obligation

judging a man is defined by honesty
why can't i be honest even to myself?
